Welcome to the Orchid Board!

"Sib" is an abbreviation for sibling. "x" is a symbol for "crossed" or "crossing", as in pollinating.

"x sib" means the two parent plants are two different clones of the same species or hybrid.

It is often possible to pollinate an orchid with its own pollen; this would be called self-pollination, or "selfing", often written "x self."

I don't know what you mean by "quarter-strength" fertilizer, and you don't mention how often you plan to fertilize.

Different brands give different mixing directions. Best to think in terms of nitrogen concentration, which you can easily figure out from the numbers on the box with an online calculator. There is one in the Free Information section of the First Rays Web site.

Different orchids tolerate different fertilizer concentrations. Some people use a low amount with every watering. Other people use more but less often.

For a lot of orchids, including bulbophyllums, people might use 10-50 parts per million (ppm) of nitrogen if they fertilize at every watering. They might use 50-75 ppm if they fertilize once a week, and 100-150 ppm if they fertilize once a month.

Bulbos are very thirsty. Don't let them dry out. Seedlings do well in bright shade.

There is an excellent book on growing Bulbophyllums by Bill Thoms. He sells it at his Web site, bulbophyllums.com.

It looks like it might be a new growth but I am not familiar with the species so I cannot say for certain.
