I have been to Al's Orchids several times in the last couple of months and he has huge Bulbophyllum hanging. They are absolutely gorgeous! If they weren't such a big plant, I would like to have one. He has them in wood baskets, mounted on tree fern and cork slabs. He even has a few mounted to decorative clay pieces. He has a very nice Elizabeth Ann Buckleberry blooming like crazy. My daughter just couldn't get over these flowers. I love visiting him, I pretend it's my greenhouse.

Bulbophyllum are a unique orchid and there are so many varieties. Some are very weird, some have unpleasant fragrances but some of the flowers are rather pretty and have a fruity scent which makes them rather nice.

I actually thought about ordering the orchid from him last week but I worried about the size. Most of my Bulbos are small (but ramble).

Well, I took Estacion and Optimist's advice. I carefully teased the media off the roots. It was extremely hard to tell dead from alive and I ended up with a huge pile of, I would guess, dead roots. I rinsed it carefully and let it soak in filtered water w some fish extract. I noticed a few new roots starting. So, I carefully wrapped it spag, set that into a small net bag and put it in a clear plastic bowl. I plan on using a tree fern pot and when it comes, I should be able to drop it right in and hang it.

I don't know if I can speak for the plant but, if I had been in that pot, I would now think I had landed at the Hilton! Hopefully, it will act accordingly. 😉

I have a Lovely Elizabeth. I agree with Estacion in the first reply. I had the same problem and yes, mine improved with a shallower pot and a moister medium (I grow mine in a mix of fine bark and sph moss). It is a pretty flower (larger than I thought) although I was a bit taken back by its "scent". To me, it smells like unwashed b.o. At least the scent is not that strong.

I'm not sure I need to water every day, the fresh spag is staying nice and moist. My take off on optimist's dog dish allows it to soak up a little water. Humidity is 45-50%. Crossing my fingers.

I work in a public library. I don't need to smell that at home, too!

lol. It's not that bad because it's faint and the flower is lovely. I bought it because it was described as "scented".

Well, Elizabeth is out of quarantine and rooted into her spag filled net pot. She has a new growth starting under her newest growth. Unless you all think it unwise I'm going to pot in the tree fern pot and hang her up.
