bulbophyllum (hapilochilus) dolichoglottis

Had to snap this picture before I headed out to see the parents for the holiday. Blooms only around this time of year and not for too long, and not many blooms at once, in fact it's sorta one here and one there in winter... considering that others have said it can bloom at various times of year, if anyone has any idea what it likes that would be great. It's grown in a tank, stable parameters, high humidity, medium-low light.

This is a bulbophyllum either now called hapalochilus or was formerly hapalochilus, and comes from new guinea. For your terrarium growers, many plants from new guinea tend to do well in terrariums with high humidity, minimal temperature fluctuations and minimal yearly temp changes. Probably most like cooler temps, but tend to not like heat. I had two of this genus/group but the other died from too much heat this last summer (alkamaarense). I imagine that this one may bloom better with lower night temps, but isn't possible where the tank is situated. Some of the bulbos from this area do like cooler temps, which I can't provide (with stable high humidity) ultimately.

It has such a long lip it's difficult to photograph! oh and it's a tiny plant. I can't measure it but the bulbo and leaf barely make 1/2"/1.27cm... but the flower is big compared to the growth. Grows very very well in my conditions thankfully, but hopefully this season will flower more as temps aside, I've upped the lighting significantly than last year...

anyway, Naoki, it's from andy's and thus on a little cedar plank. Not too keen on those but it's softly covered by moss at this point... think it may be rotting underneath but it's basically growing in the moss which I found is a good way to keep bulbo's like this wet without sitting in water that they like... I've killed many mini bulbo species from either letting them get to dry or by keeping them too wet. Tree fern pieces are still the best mount material for me with mini bulbos and miniature pleuros.

Today is cloudy but I had a chance to take couple photos. I think this flower is not going to open further. Today it smells like cheese. It's not a bad scent. It smells better than Bulb annandalei that is more like fermented cheese
