I agree it is a bit of money for a plant, but not one of this type is all I meant.

What you're talking about right now regarding the price of Bulbophyllum phalaenopsis was pretty much what I was talking about when you were asking whether the Neomoorea wallisii was worth the purchase for the price that it was.

Here in the US, the price for a blooming sized Bulbophyllum phalaenopsis is quite high, (anywhere from $60 to $120); but in South Africa, you found one for $40 - $45.

This orchid is obviously valued differently here than it is there. Hence why someone from South Africa is better suited to answer your questions about an orchid's worth.

Just a tiny bit off topic, but this does address what you and Jonada are talking about right now, as well as one of your questions in another thread nicely.

Bulbophyllum phalaenopsis must be fully mature before flowering. Maturity for this plant requires at least 3" diameter bulbs or at leasst 24" long leave. Getting this one to this point require years of growing. So my point is, you do not need to worry about the smell of the flowers. You need to worry about growing this plant. This plant requires a good bright light to grow (like cattleya requirement) and avoid water getting to its crown. If you live in the North side of the USA, make sure that the plant is dry at night. I lost one mature plant because of the root rot caused of too much water (thats what according to Bill- the bulbo's God, who said water more!). Once you successfully grow this plant to maturity, then you may be lucky enough to get this to flower. Speaking about flowers, you can smell the flowers if you put your nose close enough. The intensity of the fragrance will be high when this plant is exposed to bright light. And it is not that bad comparing to Alaska's Fish emulsion fertilizer. So don't worry about the flower's smell. Grow it first.

This sounds and looks like a unique orchid. I hope you are able to grow one and get some "smelly" blooms.

I have finally joined a orchid club as well as a orchid growers od south africa group. I think the main reason for price difference between countries is in places like the USA or Europe it is much colder than here in the southern hemisphere. Meaning you need to protect your plants in warmer greenhouses, i grow mine in a protected shade house like most of our growers. You can't go full skale without a greenhouse.

Anx i am happy to announce i am going to get a seedling tomorrow, not a BS but now i can raise the plant in my conditions

Default My Bulbophyllum phalaenopsis

The one I purchased cost over $100.00 but it was well worth the cost. If you have the room then I say save your pennies to get one cause they are worth it. At my age I look for orchids that have bloomed or will in the next year, my Bulbo. phal had bloomed once before I purchased and I was very lucky to have mine bloom within 2 months from the time I received it. It is a fascinating orchid to watch from the start of the bloom to the end. I wish I had started taking pictures from the very beginning of the bloom cause it starts the size of a pea and then turns into a great bloom, for sure when it blooms again I will take pictures showing the progress. I was even lucky to get 3 seed pods out of my bloom that I am going to send to Orchids by Marlow once they mature, I offered them to Marilyn at Windy Hills farm where I purchased mine but she passed on them but Jim will be glad to take them and I hope he gets many plants from the pods. Mine stays outside year round in one of my orchid sheds as my weather in South Florida is similar to yours and to tell you the truth mine never had a bad smell. Good luck with yours!
