Bulb grandiflorum 'Yellowstone River,' AM/AOS

Just got this at an orchid auction yesterday for a great price. It doesn't smell at all (that I've noticed), but I've heard from another grower that it smells a bit like cracked peppercorns. It's currently potted in loose long fibered sphagnum moss, but I need to repot it. As you can see it has quite a few growth leads and is overgrowing it's pot. I want to pot it up into something bark based, probably small orchiata with coconut husk chips, rice hulls, some perlite and maybe some lfs mixed in. Does this sound good? I'm going to wait until the bloom is finished before repotting. It's my first bulbo and I want it to grow well.

Looks like a great plant. Nice new growths. I grow my bulbos in a mix similar to what you have described, bark, spag, coco husk, perlite...charcoal...diatomite...depending on what I have at the time. Good luck with it...im sure it will do well and be the first of many for you.

Your mix should be fine if you give it enough water. I have the grandiflorum and grow it in basically the same mix in a net pot but sit the pot in a shallow container of water. I have peanuts in the bottom of the pot, the p'nuts stay wet and the roots grow into the p'nuts. They love the moisture.

I grow this particular Bulbo in medium light.

Brook had a good point that I was thinking about after my post...if you like to water, perhaps a basket would work well for you. I have most of my bulbos in mesh baskets or strawberry baskets and they love it and air can get at them a bit better as well.

I saw this plant mounted outside of the clay pot, at a local nursery. There was no way to store water in pot as it was a pot with holes and decorative cut outs. Nursery said they just hose it down daily.
Plant had gorgeous leaves , many roots all over the pot and was in bloom.

Any update on the potting media for this? I just picked a Bulb grandiflorum 'Yellowstone River,' AM/AOS up as well and need to repot it. It is currently in spag moss, which has turned green on top, thus making me think the moss has broken down and is old. The plant is ready to bloom (two spikes) and it appears to be ready to divide soon as the plant is growing over the pot on two sides.

Well, I decided to repot my Bulbo. grandiflorum 'Yellowstone River,' AM/AOS, and the results were not good. The plants was spilling over the pot filled with old spag. moss on two sides of the pot, so I decided to clean and rots and split the plant into two - with each division having one spike. Well, almost all the p.bulbs on each division have dried up in a few days, and the spikes have turned yellow. Will try to water and create a humid culture, so I think the roots went into shock from moss to fir bark mix medium.
