Questions about my bulbophyllum. Male
Talking Questions about my bulbophyllum.

I have a Bulbophyllum longissimum and it has grown beautifully but last fall it did not bloom correctly as it was very weak and it fell off as it was spiking. The plant also send out one growth that was drastically shorter than the other bulbs. The leaf on that tiny thing fell off. I am not worried about it but want to find out why.

I've had tiny ones like that, and found it needed repotting... however I find my hybrids of this Bulbo seem to sulk when repotted... but do even worse long term if not repotted. So I go for repotting them, but not too often.

How long has it been in that moss?

I find mine do well in airy moss that dries quite fast. They seem to do best in open baskets of moss instead of potted in bark or anything else.

Sorry for the long wait, been stuck in school away from my orchids. School is evil!!!

The Bulbophyllum has been in the moss for about 11 months and plan to repot it soon. So how would culture in a basket differ from a pot? This is a species cross. Both parents are longissimums according to the tag.

The people I have bought my bulbos from here in Singapore say bulbos do well in both wet and dry moss conditions. They need lots of humidity. But what they do when potting is to lay the bottom half a short open basket with charcoal (or any large open good draining material) and only the top with sphagnum moss so it remains wet on top but dry below. I haven't killed any bulbos yet with this method... . Though for me they do best mounted on pine bark.

See my post on the fascinator longissimum cross. Actually the name should be longissimum x fascinator. The photo there shows the basket and medium.
