Default Bulbophyllum dearei

This orchid was named after Lt-Colonel George Deare who first bloomed this orchid and presented it for display or must have collected the plants and the first person to bring them to England.
This specie is endemic to Asia in the lower mountain forest of Borneo, West Malaysian Peninsula and the southern Philippines at elevations of 700 to 1200 meters. Plants blooms from summer to fall with a single 7.5 cm wide flower. The flower is slightly fragrant with the smell of ripe pears. I maintain this plant in intermediate to warm temperatures….evenly moist in summer seasons and I do not allow mix to dry = I found a sherbet glass to cradle the basket and have it half filled with water to maintain high humidity= in winter I keep the mix slightly dry and reduce watering to every other day. This is near an electric humidifier with oscillating fan to keep good air movement to avoid fungal growth. I keep this plant in medium shade on the east facing window of the kitchen potted in a 4 inches Vanda plastic basket sprinkled with fine bark, lava rock, sponge rock and charcoal to maintain a well-draining medium. Weekly weakly K-Lite fertilizer and seaweed mix alternated with worm tea mix in the warmer months but only twice a month in winter.

Bud, that is just beautiful! I find, more and more, that I really like the bulbos. I have just one, ambrosia, but they are such neat orchids. I really like the bright color and form of your deari. Very, very nice! I am going to look for one at the spring shows!

Thank You!

I haven't gotten ambrosia to bloom. I thought it was putting out spikes but they were more growths. The thing grows like mad but...no blooms. Any tips are welcome.

Just wait for the cooler temps....while it is in the warmer months keep it evenly moist and don't let it dry out. You must be doing something good for it to give you new growths.

another tip: try to cradle the plant on a bowl of water or if you saw the last picture of my post you will know what I mean: its a combination of vase culture and humidity tray....

Thanks for sharing this beauty Bud, I have one on the way, it should arrive next month. I truly do love this Bulbo, I think that this bloom is impressive, and pretty big in comparison with other Bulbophyllums. I would love to see some detail picture of the bloom taken at night against the dark sky with your flesh, these night pictures of bloom look stunning, dark black sky makes it as if you were in photo studio (must use flash though), and this gorgeous orange color would just pop up like crazy!

I just might take you up on that suggestion. I have never taken pictures of my blooms against the dark night skies.
Good luck on your new plant. I am sure you will enjoy it especially if it flowers.

I did never try them as well till like 3 months ago, and I discovered it is the best way how to take pics of the blooming orchids! From now on that's what I am planning to do, and there is no use for photo studio equipment. Check few samples
