A little monster ... Bulb. phalaenopsis

Well so much for only buying miniature orchids ... I caved in and placed a bid on a Bulbophyllum phalaenopsis seedling. I know these plants sell for a pretty penny once established and bloom sized, but I scored this guy for no more than 15$.

So my newest project (probably 5+ year project) is to raise this little stinker (literally) to blooming size!

I don't mean to be difficult, but that basket looks waaay too big for that plant, I recommend incrementally moving up in basket size as the plant gets larger.

I keep my Bulbos. in the smallest size pot I can fit them in, even letting them grow over the sides before repotting to a larger size. Their roots are very shallow. Whats the name of this one?

so, it's not the queen of bulbo's, but i find them attractive..... was lucky enough to find one at our national show we had a year back.... purely for just the growth, it's heading to a 40cm long leave now, and am patiently awaiting some sort of surprise with perhaps a flower... well pehaps, maybe someday.....

It is overpotted yes. It's in a 6" hanging basket with a bark/sphag that has been soaked in KLN.

It came growing in a 4" pot with 'sour' looking medium so I opted to repot and this was the only hanging basket I had. I asked a few fellow orchid growers their opinion on the larger basket, and they said there is no real negative effects to worry about as long as I am careful with watering ...

The plant already has two new growth eyes starting.

Don't worry about being over potted. Bulb phlaenopsis, once stablished will grow rapidly. Normally, you will get at least one (1) leave per year. Once you get a leave with more than 24" long, it will start to produce 2 leaves per year. To get it bloom, your plant needs at least 3 or more 24" long leaves. I would say, you have to keep this plant for 4 more years to bloom. Good luck

I agree - great looking little plant, but it if you keep it in that basket, you are just asking for root rot to set in. My bulbos like small pots and I have seen Bulb. phalaenopsis grown on plaques; I think it will want more air around its feet than the basked you have it in will give it. But, you are optimistic and I like that! I hope that one day that basket is too small for your bulbo!
