Lepidum X Vaginatum
Default Bulbophyllum ID

Hi all,

i've gotten the Bulbophyllum ''Fever'' a few years back and been growing them for awhile now. Just wanted to say hi to all the Bulbophyllum Fans out there from Sunny Singapore!

This was labelled as Bulbophyllum Lepidum x Vaginatum. However after looking up the web i found it didnt look like any of the hybrids. Any clue?

A very free flowering and hardy Bulbophyllum that i got when i first began and have been growing it for 3 years so far. Even flourished when placed into mother nature's hands. Anything that seems to be crossed with Bulbophyllum Lepidum is blessed with it being very free flowering. Mounted on Slab with Sphagnum Moss and watered every 12 hours. Fertilized weekly weakly.

Cheers,
Freddie

Nice! One of the only orchids that I prefer to see in bud rather than in bloom. Love the red blending to yellow at the tips!

I can see the possibilty of both parents in your cross.

Here is a link to the facebook page of the hybridizer, there is a photo of the cross which has been registered as Bulb. Meen Sassy Girl. Their photo is quite different than yours but considering the different shapes and colors of the parents, one would expect the progeny to be very variable as to shape and color. I would ask the hybridizer whether they felt this was the same cross, I'm sure thay have seen plenty bloom out.

Thanks all for the compliments

Hi Glen,

yup i did see those photos online, but did you see the photo on their Facebook wall page link above? it struck me as looking very similar.

it looks more like a Bulbophyllum.Meen Permaisuri = Bulb.flabellum-veneris(syn.lepidum) x Bulb.mastersianum.

Cheers,
Freddie

Okay guys! i've posted and asked them on their website, now it's just a waiting game.

I do recall that i was perplexed when this plant bloomed because it had the shape and structure of a Bulbophyllum Lepidum but it's colour differed. So i just assumed that the Lepidum Line in the cross was just a stronger gene.

Lucky you! I would think you are in the perfect climate to grow these Could it be Bulbo.masterianum? There are a few pictures on the web. The url below is only a drawing but there are others at this site:

SOF » Bulbophyllum mastersianum

Hey thanks, i feel lucky to be able to grow bulbophyllums, just seeing their flowers is already all too fascinating. to God's wonderful creations. Singapore weather = good for plants and F1 Racing but it gets terribly humid, you sweat even while you're sitting down doing nothing.

im not sure myself but Meen Nursery has replied, quote:

"Thanks for your visit. It's not Bulb.Meen Sassy Girl(Bulb.flabellum-veneris(syn.lepidum) x Bulb.vaginatum) for sure. Anyway I'm rather sure, the hybrid has Bulb.flabellum-veneris blood."

Haha. oh well... you're guess will be as good as mine. Maybe it's a cross between Bulb.flabellum-veneris(syn.lepidum) and Bulbo.masterianum? which explains why it's orange? sigh... if only i knew it's true name.
