Unhappy Bulbophyllum saltatorium var. albociliatum ( miniatum) leafs are folling off

I have a problem whit my Beks ( i call my miniatum Beks), leafs are folling off. They dont become yellow or anything, just if you pik up the plant some will fall. Its going on for several weeks now.
It was in small bark mix whit charcoal, in my aquarium, so im afraid that it didn't get enought air movement. I took it out and then a friend visited me and told to put it in spagmoss and cut off old bulbs that dint have any leafs and very starting to get soft. So i think i overwater and it didnt have air circulation. But in the summer Beks was fine and had 4 new bulbos, new roots. Now 2 new bulbos dead, roots not growing and im afraid i have lost my Beks.
I wondered, maybe to put it in semihydro??

I am sorry to hear about your plant...but you must put it back where it was happiest....it didnt want you to put it out of the aquarium and repotted on sphagmoss... it is slowly dying. overwatering in sphag is bad...the roots are not breathing at all...put it back on the bark and charcoal and the environment inside the aquarium it was used to

This plant needs warmth, shade, air circulation, humidity and moisture...you can use sphagnum moss as a bed for it if you mount it on a treefern slab...semihydro will work too. Just remember it is a bulbo...so follow the culture and regimen for this plant. Baker's have a good coherent bulbo culture. Search for it or google it.

Hi Merytt, I can't help too much, but you might try looking for culture info on Bulbophyllum barbigerum, it's a close relative and I believe grows in similar conditions.

I grow a lot of bulbos and also had problems with this species (as in it died)-- in hindsight I think it needs warmer temperatures than I could consistently give it throughout the year. My house gets down to upper 50s F (C 13-16) on winter nights and this species doesn't do well with that.

Here's a link to the page with Charlie and Margaret Baker's culture sheet for barbigerum: Sheet List- Bulbophyllum. These cost US $10 for ten of them with progressive discounts if you buy a larger block; they're well worth it for any species you don't already know how to grow. Good luck!
