First Bulbo Fatality

Have had this for about a year. Was growing really nicely all along and then....a black spot, first on one of the leafs, then traveled down to the bulbs. I tried catching the next spotting before it reached the bulbs, cutting out and treating each leaf first (and the entire plant) but within a week, another black spot on another leaf, and so on...each leaf, one by one....turned black.

I'm assuming it's viral. Don't know if I could have done anything more or if it was destined to croak once the first black spot appeared. Any suggestions for the next time this happens? From my experience, once this happens, the attack always wins out, but maybe not?
