Default Bulbophyllum careyanum

Bulbophyllum careyanum - I recieved this plant in a trade this summer. I am growing it in a pot on the warmer side. The plant is a medium sized plant with a 24cm ls on top of a 6cm bulb and the inflorescence is 10cm.

I am in Bulbo heaven, here. This site is awesome with all you other Bulbo growers!!!! And speaking of awesome, outstanding bloom, Tom. I recently got a Crassipes which looks almost identical to this one.

Great growing! Enjoy!

Sandy, Bulbophyllum careyanum is the type for the Section careyanum (formerly racemosae) and there a quite a few which look alike and may be grown under the wrong name. This is a problem that we have here in South Africa. We used to talk of Bulbophyllum careyanum "Red" and Bulbophyllum careyanum "Yellow" to differentiate two species grown under the same name but which were slightly different not only in colour but in other ways too. I suspect that one of the plants was in fact Bulbophyllum orientale. At this stage ("Old Timers' disease galloping on! ) I cannot remember which was which but Bulbophyllum orientale has a small tongue like projection over the stigmatic surface or some such character.

Actually Mike I can only detect an ever so slight fragrance. It is so faint I cannot identify it, but it is not all that pleasant

It's new to me as well and I really like it. Some amazing flowers from this family of orchids.

Tom, the plants here that strongly resemble yours and labelled as Bulbophyllum careyanum really have a stink. If there are plants of them on a show bench and you walk anywhere near them you smell them from afar. So they have more than just "a faint" fragrance.
