Default Bulbophyllum Elizabeth Ann ‘Buckleberry’ FCC/AOS

Growing bulbos has been a challenge for me, esp. since I grow the majority of my orchids outdoors (no greenhouse yet). I've tried potting them in sphagnum only, coir only, and mounting them on cork slabs. Neither of those methods have been very successful in keeping the bulbos happy and getting them to bloom prolifically in my environment.

So, for my very special Bulbophyllum Elizabeth Ann ‘Buckleberry', I switched her to a well-draining, shallow basket filled with a mixture of sphagnum moss, coconut coir, fir bark, charcoal and perlite. I hung her in a semi-shady area of the garden, keeping her consistently moist and the humidity high. At the end of last month, she let me know how much she loves her new home by producing her first bloom under my care! I'm sure you'll agree that Bulbo Elizabeth Ann 'Buckleberry' is an exquisitely beautiful orchid

Blooms unfurled but still not fully complete

Wonderful. Mine has been cramped in a 4" or so slotted plastic basket for about 5yrs.and gave me 7 spikes this summer/fall. Didn't want to risk a repot so there she will stay. Your collection is lovely to see.

Thank you! I really enjoy sharing my orchids with you . Also, I certainly understand your hesitancy with repotting. Luckily, this bulbo was a relatively new purchase and I was going to have to change her growing medium anyway. My Bulbo Medusae has a similar new home now. I'm eager to see improvements in her growth habits as well.

Hi Yes, I do detect a slight fragrance. However, it's not a repellent odor like most bulbos have. To me it has an earthy smell like grass or salad greens.

Thank you.

I have never bulbos, as I have heard their fragrance is unpleasant. But I think I will go for this particular one, I saw this is available in the local nursery.

Not all Bulbos. are stinky but imo are worthy of owning. Don't forget...they attract pollinators that prefer the aroma of decay. The circle of life!

Yep, you seem to have hit on just the right potting media and growing conditions. That is a beautiful Bulbo indeed.

Thanks for taking a look, Cheri I think i have the confidence now to cultivate some even more fascinating bulbos. I just ordered Bulbo Macranthum from Hauserman. It's one of the rare bulbos that has a pleasant fragrance (fruity, spicy). Also, I'm on the hunt for Bulbo Manchind. It's stinky but oh, so worthy of adding to my growing collection
