Opinions wanted: yellow leaves on Bulbophylum Phalenopsis
Default Opinions wanted: yellow leaves on Bulbophylum Phalenopsis

Hi folks,

I have several leaves turning yellow on a plant I have had for years.

The leaf on the top is getting too much light and shows some sunburn. The other leaves are older leaves that were damaged a long time ago and I cut them short.

Historically I watered it by carrying to a sink and the leaves got beat up. More recently I have started watering in place.

Watering routine: Weekly K-lite (1 TBS per 5 gallon bucket with 1/2 TBS of Cal/mag thrown in). Mid week spraying of RO water to moisten.

Lights are high power led on for 14 hours a day.

It is possible it got too dry a few weeks back (out of town…) but would like expert opinions on does it look overwatered, underwatered, or just old leaves dying. Thank you!

I don't have this. The people I know who grow it water almost every day and maintain high humidity. It's considered a deep shade plant.

14 hours of daylight is unneccessary and probably too much. 12 should be enough. New Guinea is about 5 degrees from the Equator and there will not be a lot of day length variation through the year.

Other Bulbos when underwatered drop leaves like that.

Thank you. I appreciate the input and the suggestions. When other bulbos have leaves yellow like that, do the leaves ever recover or stay yellow?

Can't speak to this Bulbophyllum, I don't grow the species. But in general, once leaves develop problems those don't go away. Your goal is to make sure that the newer ones are healthy. Don't cut ugly leaves - when the plant no longer needs them, they'll drop naturally but in the meantime, they're still contributing.
