Dying Root Tips on Mounted Dendrobium Nestor
Unhappy Dying Root Tips on Mounted Dendrobium Nestor

Hi all!

I had just expanded my dendrobium nestor (deciduous nobile) mount by tying a block of pakis, a compressed block of fern stems commonly used as orchid media here in Indonesia, behind the original mount.

This morning I found that the root tips have shrivelled up, I theorise it has something to do with contact against the pakis.

Any ideas?

The pakis was used directly after purchase. If sterilisation is needed what method can you recommend?

Thank you so much in advance!

I think it is mechanical damage from root tips scraping against the new medium. I think the plant will continue to grow roots and be fine. To be sure there isn't a problem with salt in the new block, rinse it in water for a few minutes. But I don't think this is the problem.
