Hi, I have a young Odontoglossum that will need to be repotted in the next month or so. It is currently potted in sphagnum moss. I was wondering if anyone knew what potting medium is best for this genius. I live in Colorado so it is pretty dry here, it currently is in my office but I might put it in my greenhouse in the next couple months. Any information would be great! Thank you!
The most valid answer is "there isn't one", because it has as much to do with your growing conditions and watering habits as it does the plant.
Odonts generally like constant moisture and plenty of air to the root system. How you accomplish that will be totally different in your office and in your greenhouse, AND will be totally different from how anyone else might do so.
I have mine in small grade bark and they're doing well. If yours has been growing and thriving in sphagnum, however, I'd be inclined to stick with sphagnum.
Sphagnum works well for thirsty orchids in a low-humidity climate if you learn how to use it. You don't want to get it soaking wet unless the plant can suck it dry within a day, or the roots won't get enough air, and might rot. Just moisten the surface so the moss gets evenly damp throughout, and do it again when the moss is nearly dry.
