I've had this plant for 8 years now, and it was a small plant with only a couple growths of 2-3 bulbs each. I know that they can bloom off really small plants since I've seen some before, but mine started blooming progressively. I don't think I saw any blooms at all the first 3 years, produced 2 the first time, and has been increasing since. Last year I counted over 40. It could be my conditions that weren't ideal, I noticed that the plant really took off when I started leaving it in full sun all day, all summer (in the netherlands, so far north), and then leaving it in a south window in the winter in a cool room.
As a note, you can manipulate the plant shape via pot size to some extent. The wider the pot, the more it will spread out. If you keep it in a smaller/narrower pot it tends to grow upwards instead.
