If you can get over the misconception that water causes rot, you might consider either semi-hydroponics or just traditional pot culture using Lightweight Expanded Clay Aggregate (LECA) as a medium.
Water does not cause root rot - If the medium is too compact and the spaces between medium particles hold water by surface tension, the gas exchange is stifled, the root suffocate and die, and then rot.
I will add that I ALWAYS watered either with a hose or through an automated overhead "rain" system, but I did so early in the morning and had air-circulation fans running constantly, and I did not experience rot from that, either.
