What to do with a new plant growing from a shoot and other issues?
Default What to do with a new plant growing from a shoot and other issues?

I'm hoping to get some advice on what to do with a small orchid that has a few issues. I believe the orchid is a phalaenopsis. First, the plant had been potted in moss, and I think was overwatered. I'm a bit concerned it has root rot. I've included photos of the roots. I re-potted the plant in a better medium.

The second issue on the main plant I noticed was black spots on the largest leaf. The plant, however, just produced a new leaf.

Last, a second orchid plant has grown at the top of the original plant's shoot, and I'm wondering what I should do with this second plant? Should I just leave it as is? The second plant has never been watered, and yet it seems to be thriving and has a new shoot of its own. Appreciate any advice in addressing these concerns.

That's a keiki, a baby plantlet. It is obtaining growth through the spike it's sttached to. It has enough root to detach (gently) and pot on its own. You have three or four good roots on the mother, so repot it in a suitable size pot. Since I don't know your watering habits, I can't advise on your potting medium. I can't see the black spots clearly but, they may be cosmetic or mechanical damage. Unless they spread, I would not worry.

Mist or water the roots on the keiki. Don't mist the leaves though.

It will not stay healthy over the long run if you do not eventually water it. The mother plant will eventually cut off its water and nutrient supplies to the asexually produced baby plant, particularly if the mother plant starts dying.

The keiki is "sponging off" the mother plant for the time being, that's why you don't see any deleterious effects when you don't do anything for it.

I could be wrong, but the black spots look like they could just be a bit of sooty mildew. If they are, they should wipe right off with a moist paper towel.
