I find that what you experienced always seems to happen when I repot a cheap phal from its tight sphag media to a bark mix. No matter what, the plant experiences a bit of a shock and the leaves will flop and sulk, but if I soak for 10 minutes or more once a week the vigor returns to the leaves and new roots grow within two months. I never have any infection or fungus problems. It's just par for the course, and the plant eventually adjusts given just a little special treatment.
