As usual appealing to moderation is good. Rotate frequently (by small amounts) like every time you water, then there is less re-orientation than by allowing them to go long periods without moving.

Like Keith, I rotate as needed to accomodate for space. I've never seen pretzel shaped spikes. I'm not showing, so practicality is the issue.

That's what bamboo stakes are for, especially if you start to train the spike to the stake as it developes. You have to use care with a mature spike not to bend it too much in order to keep it from snapping.
