Bringing a Phalaenopsis orchid back to life
Hello,
I have an orchid that I’m trying to nurse back to health. This orchid is approximately 5 years old. It has a history of sitting in a closed pot with just regular potting soil for a couple of years, being watered with only ice cubes once a week. When I received this orchid from my mother in law (which was approximately a year ago) the leaves were dark green and wrinkled with some leaves falling off, the roots that were in the potting soil were completely rotted away, and the roots that are in the air didn’t look healthy either. During the year that I have taken care of it I have re-potted it into an orchid pot with Miracle-Gro Coarse Blend orchid mix, thorough watering every couple of days, and fertilizing every 1-2 weeks with Miracle-Gro Orchid Plant Food Mist. So far I have one new leaf that and about 4 new roots. As far as I can tell without disturbing the plant too much, the plant is trying to send some roots down into the media. It is sitting in a southeast facing bay window with bright but indirect light.
This orchid has come a long way.
I would like to know if there’s anything else I could be doing for this orchid to help it’s recovery or if I should just keep doing what I’m doing. I look forward to your suggestions!
