A well-cared-for healthy plant can live for many years. Flowers last anywhere from a month or two to 5 months or more. Once it has finished blooming, you can cut the spike just below where the last flower was, and it may do a side branch with more flowers. The first bloom on a spike is usually the most attractively-displayed so you may not want to do that, but extra flowers are a bonus - and won't stop the plant from producing a new spike. Typically flower spikes grow once a year. A large, mature plant can put on quite a show.

I don't think there is a typical life span, per se. In addition to continuing to grow upward, a plant can grow keikies, either from its base or on inflorescences, carrying on essentially forever.

I agree with them. Phals can live for several years if you are keeping them happy and healthy.

The longest I have had a single phalaenopsis was about 20 years.

It did not like 7°F in the greenhouse.

Were you trying to get it to flower?

It typically bloomed about 9 months at a time.

No, in this case, it part of my loss of my entire 20-year orchid collection to a heater failure.

That would have caused considerable ranting and raging, maybe some inpatient treatment center, if It had been me.

I have a few that are over 10 years old at least. A woman learned that I liked caring for orchids and she gave me her collection (random bloom colors). Some of them were quite old but she could not give me the stories on them. She pared down her collection so that she could concentrate on succulents (cacti).

One of my phals reliably stays in bloom from late January through August. It's only out of bloom or spike for a short break from early September to mid December. It always double spikes, and these branch as well. I love it☺

I'm curious about the blooming process.

Do you do anything special to get it to bloom?
