Default Miss Orchid Girl

Good evening and Happy 4th of July. Ok, my question to all members is about 'Miss Orchid Girl' U tube Videos. Have any of you tuned in on her U tube Site. I find her to be very informative. Now being a 'Novice" to not only Orchid Board but, to Miss Orchid Girl does she make sense and does she know what she is talking about? And, does anyone have a picture of her? I understand she lives in different countries over seas. I have not subscribed to her site. And as many videos she has put out,I wonder if Orchids are not only her passion but, also her business. So, I would any feed back to Miss Orchid Girl. Is there an Emoji for Questioning or confused......Zoren...

I think she has many GOOD things to say about the care of orchids. I would like to see her greenhouse or porch or whatever that is (she moved recently). I can understand her not wanting to show herself or her home. I would not either if I were on You-tube. You have to remember that she set up her habitat to be perfect for orchids. Your situation may be different. The main thing to realize is that each and every one of us will have different outcomes.

In that way, yes, she is fine to listen to. I listen to her. There are some that I think are much better to listen to. But remember, she is on an island near the sea somewhere in the Mediterranean somewhere. Totally different care than someone in Britain, or Oklahoma USA.

Some I like to listen to because they are entertaining. The guy in Spain, the woman in Ireland, The 2 plant guys in BC Canada, and the guy in Alabama (notice how I am not saying the names?) Other people have real selling greenhouses like Wade-- I like him but he does not make many videos. I love to watch videos from Equagenera. Most are in Spanish, but since I love and collect Cattleyas, learning Spanish is very important to me since they come from S. America, so in the 6 years I have collected, I have also learned Spanish enough to watch the videos.

So I give Danni thumbs up. She gives good "beginner to intermediate" advice.

Optimist is correct, location is a big factor in understanding how best to grow YOUR orchids at YOUR house. I strongly suggest finding a nearby orchid society, where it is possible to meet other people who are growing under conditions similar to yours, and to trade ideas. Orchid people everywhere love to talk about orchids, and tend to be especially happy to share their experience with new growers. The personal touch is best.

Roberta has given good advice. Location is very important to what care you give your orchids. I have phals outside and spray them with a hose daily right in the crowns. If I lived somewhere else, they would not survive this. Since I live where I live they thrive. When listening to "advice" on culture, always consider 1) where did the plant's genetics originate, and 2) where are the plants now (in your house etc.). A living room in a house is totally different from a rock face on a cliff in Central America if that is what the plant's genetics tell it is "home." I personally think the person to get expert advice from is someone in your area/ region who has been growing for 10+ years.

I love her videos as a beginner. Her new climate matches with my Queensland (Australia) weather quite well. But I take all her information as just that - information. I don't treat it as gospel and I chose my orchid and care for them in ways that suit my lifestyle and setting (keep them on a back deck). I tried her semi-final hydro setup for a few months with a few orchids (not the best time as it's winter!) But many I have moved back to organic media as it didn't work for me. I am learning by also watch and read many other sources of information and also by my own trial an error. It's such a relaxing and rewarding hobby for me so I try not to take things too seriously

First off, I have to say I've watched very few of her videos, most of them being unboxing videos to find out how the plants are at a new vendor I want to try.

I personally do not like watching videos for information, even from people that seem to know what they're talking about. I prefer forums, like Orchidboard, since there are always people that will rectify incorrect information/advice, or will add a "yes, but..." that can be helpful in deciding if a certain cultural method / plant / substrate is will work for you.

I have watched a few of her videos. Some of her information is good for beginners. There are also some things she tries that I wouldn't recommend doing.

An example of something good she talks about are that root health is important to an orchid.

An example of something she does I would not recommend is the use of hydrogen peroxide.

If you have any questions regarding the advice she gives, you may ask them at a forum and see what others have to say on the matter.

I don't know what she recommends the hydrogen peroxide for, but it works well (3% H2O2 that's commonly available) to stop crown rot... What don't you like about it?

I'm a confirmed user of H2O2, not so much for orchids but most definitely for cacti and succulents. My growing conditions don't normally lend themselves to fungal issues with orchids, but damping off, a fungal disease that kills young seedlings was a very common problem for me when germinating seeds of these plants, particularly indoors. When I started watering them with straight 3% H2O2, the problem practically disappeared.
