Orchid Fertilzer on Other Plants??? Male
Default Orchid Fertilzer on Other Plants???

This might sound like an odd question but can you use orchid fertilzier on your regular plants? I have some lavender, sage, pointsettas, angel wing etc.. and was just curious if I could dilute my orchid fertilizer and use it on these plants?? Just trying to be frugal and not buy another fertilizer separate for my other plants....

I currently use bloom buster orchid fertilizer.. i forget the acutal concentrations in it... but yes is it okay to use on other plants?

Absolutely! After my fertilizer solution has gone through the orchid pots, I dump it on my garden.

Me too! Don't dilute it. Your conventional plants can handle any nutrient concentrations that your orchids can. Smart idea!

I've been doing it for years. Only thing is, when my spider plant blooms, they look like little dendros.

Cool... what is the differences btw fertilizer for regular plants and ones especially made for orchids? Nitrogen and phosphorous content?

Its the only kind of fert I use. Why are orchids so sensitive to concentration? Is it because they are epiphytes? If so, then its a good thing I use orchid fert on my Anthuriums.

I think we use special orchid fertilizers based on the science behind the needs of the plants. Just as an example, I mulch around my Rhubarb plants with an inch or more of straight urea fertilizer because it's a plant that demands really high nitrogen and urea is cheapest source. I would never think of doing that with orchids! But I found the left over orchid fertilizer liquid is fine on the rhubarb, if I supplement with more urea. It doesn't hurt to reuse the fertilizer in a garden.

What does a rhubarb plant actually look like, LOL? Sure you can use it, and full strength too. Miracle Gro fertilizer is 15-30-15, the balanced version (Peters, Schultz) of water soluble is 20-20-20, bloom boost regardless of brand is usually 10-50-10. Orchid fertilizer is just another combo of NPK is a slightly different ratio.

Rhubarb looks like a giant chard plant with stems on steroids.
