To me, all orchids are very aesthetically pleasing, whether they are blooming or not, but my favourites so far are the paphiopedilums. However, although the care requirements look fairly straightforward I feel like I'd be trying to run before I could walk by getting into them off the bat.

Besides, I would eventually like to build up a varied collection over the next several years.

Thank you. I just believe it's important to know what you're getting into before you start. I used to work with animals and it was all too common people getting exotics and then not being able to cope.

Just how I am, I guess.

Go with an inexpensive Phalaenopsis, but which seems healthy. Firm leaves, firm roots, no odd unexplained yellow, watery, or brown spots, no pests.

You can easily buy such plants at ßthe grocery store.

The key to successful orchid growing is providing a little benign neglect (meaning, don't pamper them too much).

In a cooler climate many Paphs are probably easier to bring through the winter than most Phals.

That is a great way to be, actually. You will have much more success with them if you do the research first. Good luck!

Here in the US, it is not only exotic pets but dogs and cats that get abandoned.
