Tried sphag and bag method, what do you guys think?
Default Tried sphag and bag method, what do you guys think?

Hello everyone! I have this Phal that means the world to me and have been trying to save it for over two years now. Over the two years it has on and off done ok.. it never recovered from the root rot of being so tightly packed from when I originally got it. Recently it lost its one only good root so I have finally tried the sphag and bag method. It's been about maybe 3 weeks now. While being in the bag it lost its last large leaf it came with so now only has tiny leaves, it looks like a mini Phal but it's meant to be a large noid. I have posted pics of how it's doing know, 2 new roots and a baby leaf! The green pot inside the ziplock bag is just to help the bag stay up. Any advice on how to proceed would be greatly appreciated!!! How long should I wait to repot? Once reported I would put it on a heat mat. I need to save this plant, please help!! Thanks to everyone in advance!!

I had a couple in s/h that my blind wife did not notice they came out of the media and al the roots dried up. I put them on a cup with water and they both took off those the smallest one lost two leaves and finally just died. this guy took off and is in spike now. took several months to get the first root.

I would not pot it up until it has more, and longer, roots. Every time you take it out of the bag, get the roots wet. Consider getting a rooting hormone product to apply weekly. I like KelpMax, which I think is available in Canada.

While you might be able to get away with potting it up now, I'd wait until you have about 3"-4" of total root length before doing so.

C & C Orchids sells KelpMax in Canada. Mixed at 4ml/L, you'd remove that plant from the bag and immerse it completely for about an hour, gently shake it off to remove most of the standing water, and stick it back in your bag. After three such treatments, and probably one-week intervals, stop using the KelpMax and you should see lots of roots emerging very soon.

When it's ready, pot it up in medium that has been presoaked in the KelpMax solution, and at that point only add it to your water one time per month.
