Dendrobium nobile, what to do next ?
Default Dendrobium nobile, what to do next ?

Hi, our Dendrobium nobile has just finished flowering the question is what do I do next. The plant has 2 new healthy stems which have grown quickly over the last couple of months which I assume is where the the new flowers will develop, is this correct ? If so, do I remove the old stems and where should I cut them if this is the thing to do, any other tips e.g.watering, feeding to encourage it to reflower would be much appreciated, TIA an orchid newbie

Do nothing, except plenty of water and fert until middle august. When temps start to go down reduce water to a minimum.
Old canes also bloom and they are reserves for the plant so don't cut any.

To reiterate what rbarata said... don't cut! An old cane can bloom for several years, and as long it is firm, it is providing energy to the plant. When the plant is really done with it, it'll shrivel to a skinny little brown thing, and only then can it be trimmed. But on a healthy plant, that may be 3,4,5 years hence.
