Default Peculiar Phalaenopsis Bloom

I have a large Phalaenopsis that put up a flower spike 3 months ago. It produced about 6 flowers on an 18" spike. Then the spike continued to grow while all of the flowers gradually died in about 3 weeks. Now the spike is about 24" and it has produced another batch of 7 flowers. It appears as though the spike is no longer growing, but the last batch of flowers are now about 5 weeks old. Is this unusual? To the best of my knowledge, there was no change in care or environment during this period.

It may just be that the plant decided "I can do more...".

Not sure how common it is, but one of my Phals did this too. There was a brief window with mine where the old flowers hadn't wilted and the new flowers had just opened; it was quite the show.
