I can think of three things that might help.
  1. Use an airier mix. Orchid roots need all kinds of air flow to them, or you suffocate them.
  2. Repot more frequently. If you allow potting medium to decompose and become compressed, the suffocation begins.
  3. If neither of those is applicable, consider growing them warmer.

I will try the more air approach first . When you say warmer you mean to keep them in a warm place all the time.

My Phals are kept cool during winter 16-24C and warmer in summer. But I think very open bark is something to look into. I use "clear" pots so I can check on wetness and condition of roots.

Phal roots love:

1. High humidity
2. Good air circulation
3. If possibly some light
4. Warmth too

So if you get all these 4 right they should do well

I like using clear plastic pots with slits cut in the sides along with loose bark. The slits in the pot allow for more air circulation, and since they are clear, you can keep an eye on those roots.

I had the same problem with almost every orchid I purchased. The method I now use is to re-plant in the clay post with the slits cut out, and I do not compress the orchid mix, I just leave it very loose. Soak the bark in water overnight before using.

Is there any other advantage to see through pots with phals?

Yes, one minor advantage. Phal roots can adapt for photosynthesis (ie, they will remain green.) In a "clear" or translucent pot this might occur.
