Hi, I live in NYC and would to know if I placing orchids on a humidity tray is sufficient? The external humidity can linger around 30%. I've been using a humidifier all winter, and was wondering if that contributed in some way to root rot. I believe watering needs to be reduced, but didn't think of impact of added humidity.
Humidity trays don't increase humidity. They keep water off furniture. If you want to raise humidity, you need a humidifier.
30% is OK for a lot of orchids, but not all of them.
Humidity doesn't cause root rot, especially not when it's around 30%. Root rot is usually caused by roots being cold and wet, or not getting enough air. Which orchids had root rot? What were the temperatures, and what was the humidity this winter?
