Saving phal with no leaves
Default Saving phal with no leaves

Hi. I'm desperately trying to save an orchid that has personal value. It has no leaves but some viable roots. It has been having daily soakings in water and more recently in a solution of maxicrop, rain mix and sugar as advised. I'm probably panicking because it is doing nothing since losing its leaf and I'm likely expecting too much too soon, but I don't know whether to continue as above or try something else? One of the things I keep reading is that it needs warmth but I struggle to maintain that in our house. I was wondering whether, as it has no leaves and so its need for light is minimal at this point, could it be placed in the airing cupboard where it is warm and humidity can be maintained better?! 🙁🤔

What kind of orchid? What is an airing cupboard? What circumstances caused the leaf loss? Sorry, I think we'll all need more information to give any wise advice.

Sorry! Orchid is a phalaenopsis. Its 9 years old. Its last leaf died off and new one it was growing was broken. Its in a poor way but it has sentimental value. Airing cupboard is a cupboard which is warm that we air clothes in. It is currently bare root with daily soaking / drying cycle. Will get a photo...

I think the airing cupboard would be too much and kill it completely off. While I think it is probably a gonner, I would get some damp sphagnum and put it in a sandwich bag and near a radiator would be a better bet.

Thank you. Here is a photo. Cinnamon on crown as precaution when lost last leaf. Has some growth on side (possible keiki) but not really changed since initially appeared.

I would put it inside a transparent container laying on a layer of wet sphagnum in a warm and bright place.

That's a bit of good news, I would keep it in light and hope for the best.

If I put it on a bed of spagnum moss, could I spray roots sparingly with maxicrop/fertiliser solution as moisture or would this not help?

Humiditywise I think it won't cause any problems.
Does the maxicrop promotes root growing?
