Water culture Vanda

:You all have pushed me off the cliff. Just ordered one from Motes and will do the vase culture. At least I know it came from good stock and any and all problems will be my doing. These posts I'll refer to many times. TY

I don’t want to say anything just yet. Orchids have a tendency to surprise you when you least expect it. BUT, those two roots are definitely growing. AND I see two more little knobs forming ( fingers crossed another two coming up soon). And the leaf is definitely growing and another one coming too. So I am very optimistic (again, fingers crossed). I am learning as I go too. Will keep you updated on progress

The water in the vase is not that warm, it’s room temperature. So it was around upper 60’s these last three weeks. I don’t think there is increased humidity around the orchid to promote those roots to grow because those roots are in the water. I guess water itself is promoting root growth. At least that’s what I see in this case

Oh.. what I meant is if we put in warm water instead, will new roots grow out faster?

Haven't read any responses, but here's my 2 cents.....the bottom 20ish% of my vandas (Vanda Paki x Vanda Bill Burke, a seedling purchased from C & H's a few years ago) roots are always in water. Once a week it gets a full root soak for a 1/2 hour with water that was at 25ppm N for my other plants, with an additional 1/8 teaspoon of the msu fertilizer, knowing vandas like more fertilizer. The vase it is in holds around 4 cups of water. Once a month, Inocucor and kelpmax (tablespoon of each per gallon) is added for the root soak. Since I've switched to this culture, the roots have exploded and it produces the sweet sap like a maple tree in spring. It has yet to bloom but I know that up until about 6 months ago, it was not getting nearly enough light. I grow indoors in Michigan, windowsill, no supplemental light.

So, the bottom is of the roots is always in water and you once a week full root soak ?

This is an example of what I mentioned before. Cheddarbob14 is successful leaving the bottom of the roots in the water all the time. I can't do this or they will rot. I fill my vases and soak mine for 12-18 hours, then empty completely. In summer when my house is pretty warm I would like to do this every night, but sometimes I have to settle for every 2 days.

Correct, bottom is always under water, and once a week it gets filled to the rim for half an hour. The half hour time was really based off on some notes that Estacion Seca had shared from a presentation/speaker that he had seen. Something along the lines of.....after half hour, the roots do not take up any more nutrition...

Thank you, guys. I am watching this baby like I do my own children. It’s one of my babies lol 😁Those roots though look completely different from original roots of this Vanda. They have some special coating around them. It’s like a film covering the root, hopefully equipped for surviving in water? I don’t know but I feel that if something happens to those roots I am going to have a heart attack. When water wasn’t touching them for about 12 hrs, those new roots looked a bit dehydrated. Being in water 24/7 they look fine, at least for now.
