Good topic. I am going away from May 5th thru May
8th, and have many many phals and other plants to water, including 10 or so mini phals. I have a co-worker who is willing to come to my house and water for me, but I am planning on 'training' her. She knows absolutely nothing about orchids or any other plant for that matter. I plan to heavily water all of them the morning of the 5th, whether they need it or not, and I think the larger ones in 5 to 8" pots will be fine. It's the mini's I worry about. But in reading this thread, maybe I can get away with just the long soaks and moving them to a lower light area. It's more than a month away and I've already been worrying about this. I haven't traveled anywhere for over 2 years...

They'll be fine for 4 days, I wouldn't worry at all. Phals are pretty hardy, I have no trouble leaving them alone for 2 weeks in the summer, with no AC, in a room with curtains drawn. That's the maximum though, and longer and they start looking dehydrated. I usually do a long soak the day before leaving and water again just before leaving.
