Phalaenopsis Little lady with yellowing leaves and rotting roots
I got my Phalaenopsis Little lady almost a year ago. It came in a pot with no drainage, so i repotted it in a new pot and new orchid mix. It seemed to be doing well until a few weeks ago. One of the bottom leaves turned yellow and fell off. I looked it up, and found that it was normal, so I didn't worry. Then it lost another leaf. Today, I noticed a new leaf, this one on the top, also looking yellow. I pulled it out of the pot to get a better look at the roots, and from what I could see, most of them looked black and rotten. I only water when everything is dry, usually about every 10 days. I allow all the water to drain out. I keep it on a bed of wet pebbles, but none of that water gets to the roots.
Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you in advance.

I am by no means an expert, but is her pot too big. Sometimes if too large, the media stays wet too long. Just a guess as I am a total newb when it comes to orchids.

The roots are hugging the side of the pot. I don't think i could fir it in a smaller pot.

What are your conditions? Temperature, day/night? Light? Humidity?

What kind of orchid mix was it? Did it have a lot of fine particles in it? It's quite possible that if it was a low quality mix it wasn't draining well and even watering every 10 days was too much. The top layer may have looked dry, but the center could still have been wet and suffocating the roots.

I gor Phalaenopsis AAA Imperial Orchid Mix from repotme.com. I also got one of their Slotted Orchid Pots, which has plenty of drainage holes. Its generally about 70 degrees in the room, with somewhere between 50-70% humility. I do keep it on a bed of wet rocks to keep humility up. We did have an extended power outage 2 weeks ago, where the temperature went down to 50 for a few days. it is about 1/2 foot from the window so it gets a lot of light, but not any direct light.

Are the leaves rigid or a bit limp? Every 10 days sounds like not enough water to me but you have to understand I have such low humidity mine would be shriveled up. Post a couple more posts and see if you can post a picture.

I use that same mix and water when it's crunchy, sometimes I wait too long, too. However, I think the power outage was your problem. Cold+ wet is not good.

That degree of cold is likely the problem. Even 60 F / 15C is a little risky.

If it was the power outage, is there anything I can do about it now, after the fact? Should I trim off the black roots?
