Bottoms up!
One of my phalaenopsis orchid has decided to send out horizontal spikes underneath broad leaves. The bud that is trying to open up is directly under a leaf, so I devised a way to prop the leaf up enough so that the flower can open. Crazy!

My phals send mostly horizontal spikes due to the lacation of light source relatively to the plant.
But they never sent short spikes...

This is a first for me too. This Phal is a newer one to my collection, and it; s double spiked. I got it on sale at a florist shop and it was not in bloom. The second Spike is long enough that the buds are in the clear. No idea why this one is so short... |

Maybe it will grow a little longer. Spike length can be genetic too.

I don't suppose that it has a name... but if it has a lot of violacea or bellina in it, that would be very normal. It will be more clear when the flowers open - but if it is one of those, you could even get fragrance as a fringe benefit.

I have the martini glass upside down. 
I couldn't find any thing that would fit in that spot that was just the right height...

Like all plants, orchids do weird things sometimes. Propping up the leaf was a good idea.

The older leaves look just like my hybrid Phals. I think the experts will need the flowers to determine the genetics.
