Hi
My Oncidum(spelling) spike has finished and the blooms are falling off. Should I cut the spike or let it turn brown all the way down and then cut it?
Jill

Hi Jill, I usually let it turn brown then cut it off but I think its ok if you cut it now.

I cut mine down when the blooms fall off. The stem tends to be more pliable and less chance of damaging the shroud leaf on pseudobulb.

I usually cut mine when the blooms fall off but I put a little captan or cinnamon on the cut to prevent any infections.

Jill and Craig
I usually leave the spike to dry on the plant. The plant likes to take as much nutrition form the spike as possible. When I do trim it I'll leave about 1/2-1 inch on the plant.

Craig, your oncidium should bloom from the new growth it puts out. When it is done flowering, or perhaps even now, if there is an immature growth, the new spike will form from the growth when it matures.
