If you're careful not to damage the roots, I'd recommend just repotting them now to halt the root death you're seeing. Mine have all kept their flowers through the repotting process as long as I didn't accidentally cut off a live root. I bought a bunch of the 3" slotted orchid pots (

If yours are in the really flimsy plastic pots and you really want to wait to re-pot, I've had the in-pot roots do better for me when I punch a bunch of holes in the sides of the pot with a sharp pencil. If they're in a pot within a pot set-up, I also make sure that the pots aren't tightly nested in one another so that there's more air circulation.
