First ever orchid show haul - Orchid Quest in Madison
I had a little too much fun at the orchid show, and I kinda want to go back tomorrow. There were a few other things I wanted, but had to book it out of there to get the kids to swim lessons.
(I've never had a mounted orchid, but I've wanted a leptotes bicolor for a long time.)
And my son's first orchid... (He's 8 and he's been begging for a miniature phal.)
<3 The kids were upset that they didn't come with me, so we may be going back tomorrow if only to show them the exhibit orchids. It was so crowded in there that I didn't linger (and I had spent too much time shopping).

You did great! It's wonderful when the kids are interested... so good to watch the next generation of orchid lovers develop. You might pick up a few more orchids... but even more, seeing the show through the children's fresh eyes is worth the price of admission right there.

Yeah, I really wanted to get a paph too, but the line was long.
Consider admission is free... definitely worth it.

Interesting that the hanger on that Leptotes has it pointing upward. Guess they just mounted it that way. It actually tends go grow naturally with the leaves pointed downward. If you leave it this way, don't be surprised if they look like they're drooping... it will not be lack of health, just trying to do what they want to do naturally. But it's a terrific little species. It can take quite a bit of sun and if it can get that, will likely give you more flowers.

Oh ha, that was my kid since it looked better hanging on the spider plant pot that way. I've fixed it.
I'm excited to hear that. I'm so tempted to get another... I love the way they look and I have southern windows with no big trees in my backyard so a lot of sun.

Sounds perfect. As mounted plants go, just about the easiest to care for since it is quite happy drying out between waterings, not fragile. This one is just tied to a stick, no moss at all and so dries out in no time even if soaked. This photo of mine is from a couple of years ago, now lots more growth. Enjoy!

Thanks. It's my first Phrag. Excited about it since the colors were just so stunning. It's Phrag. richteri 'FV' CBS/AOS x d'alessandroi 'FV' CHM/AOS according to its tag.
And yup, that's a Twinkle. I wanted one recently when we were in Hawaii so I was excited to pick it up at the show yesterday!

I'd actually suggest you see how you do with that one before getting any more mounted ones. Mounted plants require much more watering since they dry out so fast -- particularly if you live in the Great White North. (Thinking you might since the first "Madison" that comes to mind for me is Wisconsin.)
Nice having shows this time of year with colorful flowers to break up the winter grey outside.
The show I worked in Grand Rapids, MI last weekend of Jan. was crazy busy on that Saturday. I'm sure it didn't hurt that the weather was bizarrely mild for GR that time of year. Normally for that show, the temps are single digits, wind is blowing, and snow flying. Instead, no snow, little wind and temps were in the 40s.
Saw a few interested young'uns at the show. Hopefully their orchid interest will grow.
