How to grow straight Dendrobium nobile canes
Hi,
Here's a real beginner question! I've read that orchids should be kept consistently oriented in one direction toward the light, so I've followed that practice. But my Dendrobium nobile has a young cane that's now curved toward the light. How do you folks who have orchids with tall canes keep this from happening? Is this type of orchid an exception to the rule? Any tips on growing nice straight canes? It's in a big south-facing window, if that makes any difference, although in this New England winter it's not getting a ton of light.

It's similar with almost any kind of plant growing in a window. Turn the pot a little every now and then. How often depends on how fast the plant grows.
Better not to do this when plants are developing long spikes. They grow into strange twisty shapes.

I turn them slightly as ES suggested and TRY to do as Ray suggested and often end up doing as Optimist suggested. You have to find your own best method. And sometimes twisty is ok too.

I rotate them 180º, without any mercy.
When they reach blooming time, I stop. Usually they stay in that final position permanently.

Alright you two, this made me laugh out loud and my dogs gave me a strange look.
I do about the same. I don't have a Den. nobile but I try and make my Catt's growths grow straight if there not a mini. If they are going south, so to speak I may even tie them up for a while to make them.

Thanks everybody. I can't do much about the light source, so I'll turn the plant. I will probably end up with a kind of zig-zag effect but that could be cool, right?  |
