Jumping in, I also am from a different area, but doesn't matter where you are, the conditions that the plant wants are similar and that objective is the goal. Wood basket is fine. In fact, since most of the roots are out of the current pot, I would just drop the whole thing into a basket (wood or plastic, doesn't matter). You can put some large bark around the whole thing, which provides surface area that can keep the immediate environment of the plant humid even if the surrounding area isn't. Rhynchostylis (like Vandas) are such strong epiphytes that they hate having their roots confined. The roots of this plant, winding around the pot, are about as controlled as they're going to be so I suggest not disturbing them, just give a bit of spreading room, and provide a way to hang it up. the suggestions about how to keep it hydrated are excellent.

What Roberta is suggesting, and what I'm using are different. I'm going to risk repotting into what she's suggesting, a square wooden, or plastic basket. Mine doesn't have wide enough slots for much to escape.

If it's working for you, no need to change, certainly not in any rush. If the roots want to escape, they will, as aerial roots.

Thanks to both of you, Roberta and Dolly. Like in everything there is often no one, single "right" answer. Growing plants of any kind turns out to be a bit more "art" than "science" in my experience. In either case, I appreciate all of your suggestions and feel a bit more educated as a result!
