Maybe it's preparing to drop the lower leaves because it lacks the root mass to support them?

Something as "minor" as a repot would not cause that kind of rapid yellowing. What was the condition of the roots like when you repotted?
As Ray mentioned, the question of repotting is a "it depends situation. If the media is one you know will not work for you in your conditions, then you generally will be better off repotting. There was a friend of mine from whom I would occasionally get orchids. He grew almost all of his in ProMix and they grew like gangbusters for him in his greenhouse. I, however, quickly discovered that ProMix just did not work well for me under my growing conditions in my apt. So after discovering this, I simply made a point of immediately repotting any plant I got from him in a mix that worked for me. As Ray said, in doing so, you just have to be prepared to pay closer attention to that plant ... perhaps pamper it a bit ... until it adjusts.

Just to update that my plant went downwards rapidly after I repotted it. There was collar rot, looked like it had contracted some diseases.
That was my first plant and to see it died really hurts.

Look at the first page of this thread, there is a link to another thread about this plant, with photos. It was pretty much rootless.

Did the plant lose all its leaves? If it has almost no useful roots it might have trouble supporting three large leaves, and it might be dropping them to conserve water.

Sometimes a Phal that drops all its leaves may recover if the crown is intact and it has any viable roots. But your original plant didn't have any good roots. I'm sorry about the loss of the plant.
Don't give up. Supermarket Phals are iffy for this reason. You can find a healthy one.

Thank you for the encouraging words. I reckon that sometimes we have to pay a fee in order to learn a lesson

Sorry about your Phal. I think we've all been there. Why don't you buy a new, healthy one to cheer you up?
