Default Fogging versus misting--which is better, and why?

Any facts or educated opinions on the comparative merits of fogging and misting?

I know, per MistKing, that fog droplets are 5-20 microns in size, while mist droplets -- MistKing's, for example -- are at least 50 microns. (For some reason this board won't let me supply the URL, but go to MistKing's site, find the manual, and go to page 44.)

Are smaller droplets more easily used by plants? MistKing suggests they are, saying in the manual, "[I]ncreasing the size of the water droplets . . . will result in less benefit as far as humidity goes."

But is higher humidity the sole benefit sought from misting or fogging? I've noticed, for example, that some exposed roots of my plants turn green when misted (from a spray bottle), but they remain white after even a five-minute exposure to fog. That makes me think misting is superior.

I want to use one or the other. But which?

It depends on what you want to use it for. An emitter producing smaller droplets would take longer to go through a supply of water. Smaller droplets would evaporate faster, and raise the humidity faster, but I'm not sure the difference would be significant to plants. Foggers tend to leave less wetness on the glass.

If your concern is watering orchids, it shouldn't matter. It will take longer with smaller droplets. That's why your orchids' roots are still white even after five minutes of fog - the amount of water reaching the roots is a lot smaller, due to the tiny droplets. If you run a fogger for some time, they should turn green.

Odd that you couldn't add the link, especially since the owner of this forum, Marty is the founder of Mist King!

Fogging is meant to raise the humidity. Misting (the roots, NOT the plant) is for watering.

Wetting the plant does nothing helpful, except for creating ideal habitats for pathogenic bacteria and fungi.
