I have used regular electrical wire that I have laying around the house. Usually scrap pieces. I find that 12 gauge solid electrical wire works well. Just strip off the casing and cut to size.

The nice part is that after a while the copper develops a nice patina. If you are in a rush to have it develop a patina, just poor a little ammonia in a container and stick the copper in it and cover it, the fumes will turn the copper.

If you're feeling like you want to use metal instead of wood, how about a metal clothes hanger cut to whatever length you need? Across the bottom, you'd have about 15 inches of straight piece, and if you need more, you could just straighten out some of the curves.
