Since moving out of a greenhouse environment and into an outdoor deck/window sill situation, I have really reduced my collection (from ~750 to ~12 plants), and they are either in sphagnum or being grown in semi-hydroponics.

I am pretty impressed that you were able to cull your collection to just twelve. I tried to get my number to about forty orchids but I just ordered five from Alan which brings me to fifty.

I started doing something similar with troublesome mounted plants. Works great for plants that need even moisture using tree fern (mounted S/H, if you will).

It wasn't like I had a great deal of choice on the matter.
In PA, I had a greenhouse. Here in NC, my growing area consists of five windows that make up a "bay window" type area that is eight feed wide. It faces north. Besides the gross reduction is space, that rules out a lot of the catts, encyclias, and vandaceous plants that made up a lot of my collection.
I sold off most of the plants, and Subrosa came by and rescued many of the rest.

Wow! That seems like a huge change. May I ask why you moved? Your life must be a lot easier now, but do you miss your collection?

- I retired from my "real job".
- There were just two of us and a miniature dachshund in a 4000 square foot house, in a location that has already has at least four snowfalls this month.
- We now live in a house less than half that size, and it is on the water, and I have a nice boat.
- It snows here once every few decades. In fact, the weather is a great draw - even when it gets cold, it more-often-than-not is still sunny!
- We are less than a mile from the ocean, so can go to the beach whenever we feel like it. This time of year, the dog likes to run there.
- Here, my property taxes, homeowners insurance, flood-, wind-, and hail insurance, insurance on both cars and the brand new boat are less than half what my property taxes were, alone, in PA.
- My utility bills are half what they were up north, and that doesn't include the $4500 it cost me to heat the greenhouse each winter.
True, I cannot have the orchid collection I once did, and I am having a bit of trouble with that, but outdoor activities like the beach, boating and fishing seems to be pretty good at distracting me.

That sounds like a good trade off, even for your dog.

A chime in from the "Having given up" sector. With a 'whole house' humidifier, (which is actually a 4 gallon portable unit from Vornado, which is really just an extra large humidifier) and a cool mist unit, both going 24/7, the humidity levels are never above 38-39%. I am working on just saying NO! each time I go to check the humidity monitor... if only humidity trays actually worked!

Ray, do you need company? Hehehe we had 8F this morning.
greenpassion I think I have given up on a humidifier except of down stairs in my Masde shelf. They keep dying on me and a pain to clean.
