I'm not sure where I got the information but somehow I remember being told that phalaenopsis need more frequent watering when they're in spike. Is this true?

Not unless you find them drying out faster. Use the same criteria--green roots, skewer, etc.

It's a nice problem to have though

What Fishmom said.

Generally, Phals require more frequent watering in a growth period because they're producing something. A flower spike is a specialized leaf, and during leaf growth they need extra water. However, you don't want to overwater them. Monitor them by following the same wet/dry criteria as always.
