Paphiopedilum flower wilting before opening?
Default Paphiopedilum flower wilting before opening?

I've had this orchid for about a month, currently sitting in a NE window in the PNW US area, zone 8b. Temps in house are generally 65-75, humidity around 55.

The flower on this orchid looks much less happy than it did when I first bought it. It looks a little wilted.

A couple of things. The door nearby was left open during the night because it was way too hot for sleeping and I'm sure the temperature dipped quite a bit. Also, I turned the humidifier off since I have such a hard time getting the orchid area warmer than 70%. It's the only window and it's the sliding glass doors to the apartment patio.

So, any idea on the flower and if I can perk it back up?
I was told this one prefers some shade, but I'm not sure a NE window isnt too much shade. Or is it the drop in humidity or temperature? All?

Thank you.

I'm new, but the media looks pretty fresh. Could it have been repotted just before you bought it and suffered some root trauma that would cause the bloom to fail?

I've also found the wood skewer method helpful in determining water needs: maybe test out the moisture levels and see if it needs more water? I try not to let my paphs ever go completely dry and re-water when they get on the dry side of damp (about every 5 days for the ones in the house).

The flower, I'm afraid, will not revive. Sudden change in temperature is probably what did it (more than the change in humidity which I have never found to be a problem, since it fluctuates widely with the temperature anyway. But in general, you can grow this type of Paph (Maudiae type) pretty much as you would a Phal, except that it wants to be wetter.
