There are some places that do need added humidification constantly, like the desert, or Mars. I do not think that Vermont is especially dry?
On the other hand, if you actually own this home, year in and year out of very high humidity may lead to problems.

If it is any consolation, I grow outside, so the RH is what it is, I can't do anything about it. Since early November, the mid-day RH is maybe 30% maximum, some days it has gone down to low single digits - with high temperatures ranging from 95 deg F at worst to about 70 deg F when it's comfortable. Forecasts look like more of same for several more weeks. Nights have also been quite dry (one aggravating factor for all the fires, alas... ). And even the sensitive plants such as thin-leaved Pleurothallids are fine - I just water well in the morning, everything is dry by nightfall when temps drop as low as 40 deg F or a bit lower. The mounted plants, and the nearly bare-root cold-tolerant Vandas are doing quite nicely in low RH. Orchids are tough and adaptable!
The good part... flowers don't get botrytis when temps dip at night.

I had started this thread in November. Since then I have gotten the humidify issue as good as it's going to get, and am not a worry wart anymore.

That is good, being a worry wart doesn't help. But the thread is still I'm sure of interest to many others who have similar quandaries especially those new to growing.
Many might not think through, at first, what can happen to a home not in a desert area, that is humidified constantly.
Of course this should not put people off from humidifying temporarily if they are ill and more humidity might help, all of what we do is a balance between results we want and the costs of getting there.
