Dormant roots?
The majority of my phals have nice green tipped growing air roots, but I also have several phals that have a combination of actively growing air roots and dormant air roots. Inside the pot they are all actively growing. Is this normal? My humidity levels are kept at around 50% now that I have 2 humidifiers going.

Tap water shouldn't cause much residue, unless you're on well? I use the same mix everytime all time with low fertilizer, I don't notice any residue and water my plants almost daily strictly by heavy mistings, works well with mounted plants, with pots I'd be careful not to over do it and to be careful not to soak the media in the pot, the idea is just to get water to those aerial roots so they don't dry up. Yes you could use RO water. Don't overthing it too much!!

It's not a big deal if the air roots don't grow continuously. They will resume growing in suitable conditions. A lot of people in cold-winter climates have Phals that don't grow much during the winter, and that's OK.

Well that's reassuring ES. And yes I do have well water, and it doesn't really leave a residue so much as sort of spots.
