I have a Cattleya hybrid that had a spike, and I went outside to water a couple weeks ago, and noticed it was hanging at an odd angle, and upon closer inspection I could see that an insect, probably a grasshopper, had chewed almost all the way through, and the spike was just dangling by a thread. The buds died a few days later. It was tragic, especially since the plant is new, and I got it back in about June, and it was in bud, but when it arrived, the spike had broken. So now I've missed this one twice, but I was impressed that it tried to bloom twice in a three month period. There's another new growth just starting, so maybe I won't have to wait much longer, and maybe the third time will indeed be the charm.
